Mentoring is not same as the coaching

Budhha went to great pains to understand secrets of life. Gautam Buddha realized the ultimate truth and was in possession of pure knowledge. Then there was a sudden need felt to spread his wisdom to reinvigorate the thought mechanism and life of people. He chose five mentees and his task was to groom and equip them with his core principles and practices. With those five mentees he laid the foundation of a movement and a strong organization devoted to upliftment of mankind not meant for pecuniary advantage. He saw them as performers helping them hone their abilities and advised them on navigating new challenges. Buddha mentored them. He documented his principles and trained his disciples’ thoughts so as they can pass the wisdom to others that till date it is being preserved without an iota of change. He defined the process of knowledge transfer down the hierarchy line. Buddha invented modus operandi of teacher and disciple relation that even after thousands of years his movement is going smooth with no alterations and his principles and practices are carved in stone. Buddha accomplished his mission in a role of mentor leading thoughts of the people. On the same lines business leaders are busy taking a leaf from Budhha’s book of successful leadership structuring their roles following his footsteps. In a new role of mentor they are busy in looking out for mentees with whom they will share the secret formula of business to make it as a legacy, to make a business system that is loaded in favor of gen Y.

There is a substantial paradigm shift noticed when it comes to the concept of leadership. It’s now more about coaching than command. From every captain it is being deserved that he should coach his subordinates. In order to survive, the organizations have realized that first generation leaders should pass their knowledge and wisdom to coming generation leader. Days of “One man show” seems to be outmoded. Now organization leaders wish that people should remember it as a stalwart brand for generations and to achieve this purpose mentoring is new buzz word.

Normally mentoring is an activity that is being looked upon as post retirement activity where you train a team. When you choose to become a mentor it is not a time to handover the reins of power. Mentoring is a logical progression a far bigger role then leadership. Mentoring shouldn’t be mistaken as coaching. Coaching is done to achieve short term goals and for immediate returns whereas mentoring is a long inning to achieve a vision. Coaching is a common string tying mentoring and leadership. Ideally a Chief Mentor Officer is a person who is seasoned Chief Executive officer. To become a mentor a CEO should detach self from daily operational responsibilities. As a coach mentor helps team to achieve short term goals of increasing profitability of the company. In principle he shortens the learning cycle of a mentee and accelerates his performance. As a Chief mentor officer he focus on organization and its leadership and design a strategy that will help leadership of company to sustain for coming hundred years.

A manager today cannot plan a career growth for self keeping career plan of his colleague at back burner. To climb the organizational ladder one has to adopt part time coaching/ mentoring techniques along with career planning of peers. This is a typical boss and peer relationship. However CEO and mentor relation is like of a teacher and seeker. As a skilled teacher mentor coaches his CEO to deal with macro anticipatory problem that business faces. Mentor equips CEO with techniques of dealing with global competition, governments, global client without interfering in his job. If a CEO discovers a true leader with potential then he must start pondering over his role as that of Mentor. CEO as a business leader will take care of financial years whereas mentor takes care of company’s growth in coming decades.
In three cases a CEO must ponder upon to become a CMO. First if he is realizing that he has achieved and shrouded with feeling of have been there and done that. Secondly he feels burn out and full of battle fatigue and lastly, there is an overwhelming need where company requires new direction and aggressive growth. In all three scenarios he must ponder to become a mentor. He must select mentees and take them under his wing. He should groom mentees to face challenges in a given function he specializes in. He should become a sounding board. Mentoring helps in building an informal environment where people can air their grievance at the meeting to mentor. Most important, it’s all about shaping people’s perspectives. It’s to prepare the leaders who are well equipped with information outside the realm of their day to day job. It could be stakeholder management, winning investor’s confidence, protecting environment and designing strategies to assure sustainability of company during turbulent times.

There is a sudden surge in mentoring programs and it is top on the agenda of top management. They are feeling to accelerate the development of top performers and their long term retention either as employee in many cases or as a partner in exceptional cases. Mentoring is integral part of leadership. It’s duty of every leader to retain talent within his circle of influence. But a mentor goes outside circle of influence and augment span of his leadership. He can help mediocre performers, revitalizing midcareer executives, and closing skill and ability gaps on the staff. He deals with soft issues that have direct impact on balance sheet of the company. A more correct perception about mentoring is that it is no longer a feel good initiative. Mentoring is a valid strategy for developing individuals while saving the organization dollars. A developed and motivated individual add millions to balance sheet of the company. Not every organization can have a Chief Mentor officer as it largely depends on the context of work and nature of business. But every organization should have a mentoring program at all the levels. Retention rates are very low and there is a shortage of talent. Those who are performers are always hunting for an opportunity, a better organization. These people are to be tapped and preserved. Their potential should be unleashed by mentors with perfect business coaching. It is a soft issue and difficult to measure but mentoring program should be looked upon as an investment.
A seasoned leader can list down all the mistakes that his peers are likely stumble into. He can point out top five missteps that young managers take during startup. As a perfect coach he trains the guns of top performers when it comes to issues that can doom a company. As a mentor, a leader is in a league of his own.

Happy Independence day

We have seen lot many people coming forward forcing government to introduce reforms. There have been large scale movements we have witnessed. If we are not capable of creating a movement we still can make our country progress.

On this independence day let's take a vow:
That we will not litter rubbish on the roads
That we will follow the traffic rules
That we will make sure before we buy any property, vehicle we follow the set procedures
That we will pay our taxes honestly and timely
That we will conduct our businesses with honesty
That we will do our jobs passionately
That we will not accept bribes or kickbacks
That we will donate some time and money to organizations devoted to social causes
That we will encourage our kids to take interests in sports

And there are many such little changes if we bring in our lives the nation will march forward. Any reformed and progressive nation means reformed and progressive citizens. And at the same time a corrupt nation means corrupt citizens. Think about it!
On this independence day let's take vow that we will reform our nation while bringing reform in ourselves. We do not need a team and schemes to grow our nation but a willingness is enough.

Story of a shrine - Seremban Gurudwara Malaysia

Story of a shrine – Seremban Gurudwara Malaysia
I now have a brick and I will make my palace soon. I now have a piece of land and I will make my kingdom soon. This anonymous saying is a tribute to spirits of Sikhs based in Malaysia. Sikh history in Malaysia is traced back to 19th century when they have been bought here by British Army and got stationed in places like Penang, Manting and Seremban. The Sikh regiment’s main purpose was to safeguard business interest of British empire especially tin mines in Malaysia. Because of their onerous duty and generous attitude they earned respect among British officers. As mark of respect towards their faith they donated piece of land near to present railway station to build a Gurdwara. In 1905 they moved Gurdwara to its present location on Jalan Templer which now is erected on area almost half acres. Seremban gurdwara foundation was laid down by a British officer and its management comprise of sikh police officers. They slog day in and out to raise it as shrine and adobe of social activities. After independence there was a resurgent of thick set Sikh comprising 600 police officers residing there.
During 1942 Japanese attacked and occupied Seremban. A Japanese soldier hurt a sikh woman because she refused to bow her head. Then all sikh came forward to negotiate and occupied middle grounds with Japanese. As cumulative effect comprising mixed feelings of fear and respect Japanese army funded ration of Gurdwara. Prasad that Sikhs cooked with rice, corn flour, ragi-flour and palm oil was give a nick name of “karate Prasad”. Till 1945 they maintained a cordial relationship with Japanese army and act upon as bridge to connect them to soldiers of Netaji’s Azad hind fauj.
“In proximity of Gurdwara there is a church and hindu temple. We have people from all walks of life taking darshan of Granth sahib”, explains Sardar Payara Singh, an eighty year old strong built sikh who landed in Malaysia in 1949. He is royal descendant of king Johar Singh wala family of Punjab located near Mogha district. “From 1969 onwards I got actively involved in activities of Gurdwara and was president of committee till 2005. After independence of Malaysia this place was renovated and the then second Prime Minister of Malaysia Abdul Tun Razak laid foundation stone. Today we have more than 500 families associated to this shrine. We build it brick by brick and today this two storey has an air conditioned prayer hall, fully operational and well equipped kitchen and store room, a langar and multipurpose hall, a library and several rooms. We have well furnished rooms where people from all over the globe come and stay to devote their time in well being of community.” Said Pyara Singh. Latest trends like Information technology aren’t neglected. With an estimate investment of $ 40,000 committee set up computer labs and automated various day to day activities of shrine.
Under his and Dr. Parim Singh stewardship there was again major renovation costing nearly $ 600,000 out of which nearly $ 250,000 were donated by locals.
“We give kitchen and hall to people outside our community too hold marriage parties at free of cost. We are among the pioneer gurdwara to initiate and establish an English medium school. We provide educational aids to poor and deserving students. We provide scholarships to students who have vested interest in further studies”. Continues Sardar Pyara Singh, “through this place of worship we have successfully connected our generations to spirits and values of Sikhism. We teach them that being a sikh doesn’t mean only to bear 5 K’s but it is about living a devoted life and embracing values that sikh gurus have advocated for. To profess this idea we regularly hold lectures, kirtans, music classes, sporting activities and invite knowledgeable preachers and saint to convey ideas of spiritual up-liftment.”
Very recently Government of Singapore appointed a sikh as chief of their army. This is an epitome of valor and wisdom a sikh inherits in their blood. To spread hands and beg is not they have in their veins. As a result of this quality they have emerged as powerful business community as well in South East Asia and they have played a pivotal role in raising Malaysian economy. During 1927 when economy went under depression the worshippers went out of the way selling their own belongings like jewelry and even livestock enabling committee to continue their services and services never lost momentum till 1929 when balance left was only $ 130.  Majestic and grandeur Seremban gurdwara is symbol of their straightforward equivalence between economic progress and social well being.

Star - to be or not to be

Star - To be or not to be
Look above your head a widespread sky. On that sky see those shining and twinkling stars. What we see as shining star is actually continuous burning flame. This is what life of a celebrity, rich and famous (read) star is like. That burning ambition to be somebody got them at the top. Nevertheless they have to keep burning to maintain their shine.
World admires their shine. What is more, people make celebrity as their role model. This ardent desire to be like star makes many followers to climb higher and they wish to touch the sky alike their role model. And this is a lifetime achievement of rich and famous when people follow their footprints. Hordes of cameras, hundreds of people are behind them. They want to know how they live their life as simple as how their bathroom looks like or what is their favorite color. What is their favorite time activity, who was their past beau, how they rose from rags to riches. Indeed a celebrity’s life is talk of the town.

People look at their fortune but not spending of millions that they are doing to sustain stardom. On all the way to road to success they have won true enemies and false friends. Their personal life is a public show. Their personal affair makes the headline. Moreover they cannot come out in open freely to see the sky. Sometime they again look back at those lanes where they dreamt of becoming a star. They miss those moments and seldom weeps in a dark corner of their mansion.

While seeing pains of life of rich and famous most of the time people do not want to become glitterati. In my opinion there is nothing wrong to be a shining star but it is matter of regret to be a falling star. Rich and famous have to pay the price of stardom they have achieved. Every achievement they make comes with a price tag. People who maintain their celebrity status for long have actually planned and visualized it while they were on streets. They calculated the price they will pay on road to stardom. Similarly one who has an ardent desire to become rich and famous should also know the price tag. They need to learn from lives of people who chose this path knowing pros and cons. In brief one who wants to become a star should know that he/she has to burn his/her life.

Think before you smoke

Doctors worldwide are raising concerns on number of deaths happening due to lungs cancer. Globally governments have expressed their concern over cause of cancer I.e. smoking. They are pondering over new rules to exercise control over this habit that is taking toll over health of many.

It's astonishing that it's not smokers whose health is more at risk but it's passive smokers who are more prone to risk. Both categories are prone to risk of getting lungs cancer and diseases related to heart.
Gravity of problem is serious and all steps taken have proven futile to erase problem of smoking 100 percent. Given fact that you cannot force anyone to stop smoking is major hurdle which hasn't been overcome.
Forcing directly means snatching away their fundamental right.

We should take consequences to economy in consideration if smoking get banned totally. First it will affect revenue that government earn in form of taxes and duties imposed on sales of tobacco. Secondly, at minor level it will affect paper industry and hundreds of vendors selling cigarettes will loose earnings. Contradictory to it if government gain money in form of taxes they are imposing on sales of tobacco it could be utilise to improvise health services while slashing cost of such services. In my opinion government should hike the tax resulting in an increase in price of cigarettes. This in turn will discourage people to consume less cigarettes.

Policing all vendors is almost near to impossible as police cannot deploy extra force to see ban being observed by vendors and consumers. Making stringent laws doesn't mean that you can stop people smoking at public places. Rather they will find covert ways to continue with the habit.

We agree that smoking should be banned but at the same time we need to ensure that individual shouldn't be deprived of their fundamental rights. Celebrity endorsement, ban on public places, encouragement to quit can minimise the problem but cannot erase the problem completely.

Mahatama Gandhi

Mahatama Gandhi

In a marathon race there is one difference between winner and looser.  The winner runs that extra mile that the looser is not able to run. This is applicable on our life and great people’s lives. They go an extra mile to serve the purpose. They take control over their life and renounce worldly pleasures and serve humanity at the cost of their life. One such person who influenced thoughts of many had the habit of walking miles and miles reaching out people. Spreading the message of peace and brotherhood he lead the Indian independent movement and bought down mighty British rule in India with his non violent movement.
When whole world was fighting a violent battle with guns for freedom from colonial rule, he lit the lamp of truth and peace in South Africa. When he was thrown out from the first class coach of train on Durban platform and was slapped that slap shook his soul. That was an awakening of a man who studied law in England and who was a very shy and reticent person. A short and fragile person who took mighty British Empire by its thorn was Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi alias Mahatama Gandhi. He urged people to let down their guns and adopt non violence and advocate for their own rights. He asked for the basic right to live as human in a free and liberal society with equal rights during the time when racial discrimination was order of the day.
He raised his voice but not hands. He raised his concerns not pains. He devised techniques of protest advocating for truth. Protest march, fasting, sit down, non cooperation were some of his popular weapons he used against British killing their willingness to rule. Be the change what you want to see in the world said that he changed many peoples’ lives.

Pune’s traffic problem – diagnosis and possible solutions

Pune’s traffic problem – diagnosis and possible solution
One of the way to get rid of problem is to bring it in limelight and to create uproar so as to create pressure on decision makers to come aboard and solve it. It is the best way not the only way. This statement made fits very well in context to Traffic problem in Pune. It’s not matter of a day or two but we have witnessed augmenting menace on roads for years and raised our voices blaming a system. It is time to ponder over other ways than blaming Ms. PMC and Mr. Politician.
At first hand we have to take responsibility to curb out this chaos on roads at personal level because at first we are victims of it affecting our lungs, eyes, hearts every part of body. Some youth organization came up and did some voluntary work distributing stickers and requesting people to obey traffic rule.
Traffic on any given road is like free flowing water and traffic signals serve the purpose of dam restricting & controlling movement and speed of vehicles. With given 105 chowks on near about 1000 sq. km of road is not a control measure but has totally affected flow of vehicles. Take a drive from Deccan corner to PMC HQ. You will come across some six signals at a stretch of road less than 2 kms of distance. One signal, two signal, three signal…and dam of patience got broken there and people start breaking signal rules. A India based software firm helped traffic police of London to overcome traffic related problem that they did virtual mapping of road and saw painful areas of situation. A similar approach has to be adopted by traffic department when it comes to planning movement and flow of vehicles other than blaming Ms. PMC and Mr. Politician for non-cooperation when it comes to widening of roads.
It is prime time when colleges should brood over to contribute to this gigantic problem and have to come forward to rescue of ‘Oxford of East’. We must follow South Korean example where every citizen came forward to wipe off debris and took vow to keep their streets clean and free from debris. Student population forms a major chunk of biking on the road. Authorities must think over on how to control this while only few have come forward and deployed buses for students. It's one of the way to create space on roads.
Local companies must enhance their social responsibility. Recently, one company decided to call off their operations from city. It’s running away from the problem and not a solution. But joining hands with traffic department sorting while discussing it can be of the way other than blaming Ms.PMC and Mr. Politician. Its time to control biking on the roads and to create space for large vehicles to carry people. It can be one of the way but not the only way. It is time to encourage cycling at least twice in a week. It is time to join hands to sort this problem and it is the only way to combat it, which is affecting our mind, body and souls including Mr. Politician and Ms. PMC.

KHADKI - PRIDE PREJUDICE AND PLACE OF HONOR

There is one common factor that is common between battles and Sports and if you wish to see a rare combination than turn your wheels to Khadki.

Khadki a battle ground of historic importance, now house to Bombay Sappers, ammunition factories and a war cemetery. And some of the finest sportsman has come out of this land of spirits.  The common thing that connects is spirits. “I am honored to serve these dead people sleeping beneath concrete”. Said Mr.Behnwaal of Khadki War cemetery, which is maintained by funds, provided by commonwealth countries “many have come to salute their spirits from far off east and west. And the list include all the chiefs of UK defense forces” says Mr.Behnwaal who adds that a piper of British Army who spend his retirement income on visiting all the war cemeteries around the world and played pipe till his last breath in the honor of soldiers. Sevak Nayyar CEO Khadki Cantonment board adds,” like lot many people from Milkha Singh’s village followed his path when he made it big on track and field. But I am not aware who has started this movement. Here hockey players are in plenty. There is demand for hockey if somebody else approach we are open to it.

Agrees M.Pillai father of Dhanraj Pillai  “In fact we are thankful that they are contributing to Hockey and other games”. He came here with this father in pre independence time and settled down here while he played for India and his coming two generations are dedicated to it. “From Ammunition factory ground I have seen many players coming out and shining at international scenario. During rains whole Pune and Khadki is flooded the ground dries with in five minutes after rains that I haven’t seen anywhere in India as long as I served as coach to many teams” authenticate Pillai whose son is fighting a tough battle to prove his love and continuity for Hockey.

It is amazing to see sports all around in Khadki. Everything to anything is being played out here. Cricket, Football, Boxing, Karate, Hockey, Swimming, you name a game sportsman of the same are there. “From alone Bombay Sappers there are some 45 players who have represented India in different competitions. Five are Arjun awardees and to add more the very first Dhyanchand award for sports came to us.” Boasts Lt.col. Sunil Kumar of Bombay sappers. It was established in 1820 and looking at its valor, glamour and gorgeous nature Queen named it as Royal Engineers corps. And at that time commanders gave a special room to sports and till date the tradition is followed. While they command some 3 param vir charka till date, in pre independence time the company was entitled with one Victoria Cross. “Every year we send Talent scouting team to rope in more and more talent in sports from all over country and followed by their recruitment in Army. And from here many have made it big internationally and the list includes Sub. Shivaji Bhosale first Indian boxer to fetch medal in commonwealth games, Col. M.S.Pillai who sat a record while winning national championship for five times col.J.S.Rawat who set a new record in Ranji trophy acclaiming two hat tricks in Ranji trophy” claims Sunil Kumar.

“After I completed my tenure with Army I chose to settle down here. I was recruited owing to my skills in Boxing and from here my career took a flight in fight” says Ajit Singh, ex-olympian and International boxer whose fight with the than world champion Gama in Mumbai in 80’s is still remembered. He is living a low profile life and actively involved as coach in boxing, “It’s been years teaching boxing and under my hand came out boxers who took their career to even International level”. In a nearby school he has been teaching boxing for more than a decade during evening hours. “I have special sentiments for this place as not only I was champion of rings but created many such champion of rings”, concludes Ajit Singh.

Khadki boys have a rare quality that they never give up till the last drop. So we have tried many methods to raise tempo of our team also we should trykhadki. Its weather, healthy food, cheap living could turn them into a spirit-ful fighter as games are won by spirits rest everything is just training.

1971 Pakistan war - Before it and after that

Before it and after that
As per mythological stories whenever good have won over evil that triumph is celebrated till date as like festival Diwali Dusshera, Holi. Akin to it in real world when some ones efforts yield results in terms of triumph over all vexing conditions than it is celebrated as day of National importance likes 15th Aug, 2nd oct. 1st may and so on. The concept signifies valor and sacrifices of heroes. They sacrificed their today to make our tomorrow better. As matter of fact one such day is going unnoticed since many years when we talk of celebrations on the name and karma of heroes. It is Vijay Diwas, when India won over Pakistan and formed a whole new country as a cumulative effect of it. “I wrote many letters and columns in newspapers urging government to declare it as day of national importance.” Explain Lt.Col. Walia but subject matter hasn’t found even proper place in pages of history. “It was 26th Nov.1971 when war was in the air but nobody of us talking about it openly and we had increased our exercises on border area of Badmer in Rajasthan where we were patrolling in wee hours for some 25-30 kms daily rehearsing for unknown time that every army man waits for.” Said Lt.Col Walia of 2nd Grenadiers. “For us it was only task that was in our mind and rest all was secondary and sometime family well being worries us but there was no fear of death as I was very clear that there is one bullet on which my name is written till time that bullet gets fired nothing can count on me”. Worry keeps one assured of survival and subsequently he takes precautionary steps during war. “IN 1965 war against Pakistan and 1962 war against China where I was prisoner with Chinese army for one year I was fearless and worriless as I was bachelor but in ‘71 war I was fearless but worrisome for my wife with whom I tied the knot and promised to come back.” Narrates Col. Kapil of Gurkha regiment who was posted at Rajouri sector during that time. “But I never let the worries to get reflected on face and daily I use to pump in lot of zeal in troops with gusto in my talk. And as far as our counterpart is concerned we were not suffering from any hostile feeling but we embarked on theory of bullet to bullet and men for man.” And after war he managed to arrange a holiday in Kausali in Punjab with his wife to get along with life afterwards. But things were different with Col. Lele who was part of strategic operations and was near to family as he was posted in border area of Gurdaspur and family in Ambala so that distance was not felt. “I still remember the day when field Marshal Maneckshaw urged us to wipe off 1 crore plus Bangladeshi intruders and said enough is enough. As part of our strategy we need to blow off rail and road Bridges built on river Ravi and capture Dera baba Nanak (that is considered to be seat of Guru Nanak as per anecdote). And I was anxious for family that what they must be doing in case of bombarding in particularly” recalls Col Lele of first Gurkha rifles. He discovered Pakistani soldiers as very professional who inherited this profession from their forefathers and he had very sweet memories attached to 65 war. “I felt intensely bad and I don’t know why, when I saw bridge assimilated to dust particles in front of me as if I lost a link it was such kind of feeling.” These three infantry officers are retired and leading a peaceful life and accomplished life but regret that government doesn’t pay much heed to sacrifices of dead and living heroes in terms of other days it celebrates. Lt. Col. Walia expressed his regret on 25th anniversary of Vijay Diwas while writing columns and letters in newspapers. It is sad to see Army man who are known for their comradeship and initiatives lagging behind when event is very much related to them. “Bombay life and attitude” is the best defense they take when it comes to not living up to some human considerations. Why not adding another party amidst so many parties in Mumbai on the name and sake of soldiers?

2005 - life in AC bus of Mumbai

Mumbai possesses a heart of stone. This is the perception of Mumbai embedded in common man's mind and it is justifiable to an extent. Stress and strain at work front have dehumanized people that interpersonal relationships are on the fringes of partition.  Verbal exchange of feelings brings two people close naturally.  When one is deprive of than strain offshoots from there. And in this scenario of chaos in and out AC buses are proving to be manna in hot desert.
On condition of anonymity a couple discloses the reason to choose this vehicle over others "Here we bought tickets to buy privacy. From dawn to dusk life keeps us apart and on toes and household jobs take toll over weekends. In lack of communication I noticed a chasm developing between us so I decided to choose this bus that gives us plenty of time to get in touch with each other."   This getting in touch is accompanied with smooches and cuddles that draw attention of many. "We know they are watching us but where else we channelize our aggression, in those dingy flats that brings in feelings of hatred over love."
Ashok Kadam a conductor (popularly known as Masters)  on witnessing such scenes that troubled an orthodox Maharashtrain in him, approached top officials but they overruled his objection stating that it is not causing any physical harm to anybody and restricts him to take care of passengers' comfort and convenience only. "I haven't seen any couple stepping beyond boundaries while expressing their love in form of hugs, whispers and smooches". He is now getting well along with this considering it as part and parcel of Mumbai life where interference is prohibited in such private affairs.
"We were akin to them in our green salad days why to make fuss out of it" justifies Patrachari CEO of a logistics company and worked abroad who chose this bus over his car and explaining the cause he quotes "I was spending some 20,000 on car and its maintenance with driver's salary per month. So the expenditure was not justifying the convenience. Now the decision has just doubled up the satisfaction while cost has trimmed down to one third of what I was spending. This satisfaction is not merely coming out of saving cash but also I am proud to say that I am adding value to save fuel campaign. More use of this bus by people like me would have its merit in terms that it could alleviate roads of traffic problem as number of cars is expected to go down." He further elaborates on merits of traveling "I have made two three travel companions and we discuss topics ranging from sports to economics, politics and business."
But Aradhana Takhtani an editor with business magazine of fame keeps herself apart from chatting. That seat is her private space where she is assured of private moments. "Amidst flurry of activities from managing kids, house and work place it becomes hectic. while traveling I catch up with self after finishing puja and this recoup pumps in freshness and when mind wish to get out of this indulgence I lend ears to muttering of old ladies in particular who have some problems with their young daughter in laws. She is among very few passengers who love to observe things in and out. Biswas, a teacher by profession is close to many passengers as a friend. "When co passenger comes to know about my profession they become open to discuss learning problems of their kids. and I play a role of advisor without intruding into personal details of intricacies of their life." says Biswas who adores the courteous behavior of Masters and to express his attitude of gratitude he makes it a point to carry change and hand over to Master whenever he run short of it. He prefers this bus over train or cab as he is sensitive to heat and dust. And this is not only reason but also that kind nature of Masters and drivers drive many to take this option for traveling. "We lend special favors like stopping bus for old and disabled people and this favor extends to our regular customers. we give them tickets directly as we know that where he wishes to get down in case of change in his itinerary he says 'who roz wala nahi'" explains Kadam his relationship that his colleague Ganpat Patil also enjoys giving an instance "From lokhandwala a disabled boy aboard bus and his father request for special attention on mobile and I make it sure that he lands safely at Opera house. We find long absence of our regular passenger very disturbing and when we come back from long leave they promptly ask about our well being and whereabouts." For passengers this toting and froing daily amidst chaos is pleasure and same pervading problem of traffic for car owners is proving a nightmare experience. "Driving on Mumbai road is akin to punishment for me. decision of spending on fare offset expenses that I was incurring in car." justify 75 year Abdullah Pitalwallah who is business man by profession dealing in hardware "my wife is avid fan as she finds more comfortable than First class compartment and far from jostling crowd" says this arthritis patient who have made just one or two companion of his age group. On back benchers lovers he comments with a grin "it is their cozy corner that brings them close mentally strengthening bonds". In cubby hole flat with plethora of people sharing space and office is like second home, this bus is doing task of bringing people close to each other. Here they get chance to talk to strangers, caring and sharing is at its bloom reflecting in small favors, help, greetings and pouring of thoughts. Here they discuss something they love and hate. They know each other over years but strange fact is that they are completely unaware of name of each other. And here this thought by a philosopher holds true that love inspects the heart not the face and once the tunes matches than what is there in name?

A Sadhu's life

When there is no thing left to win over and there is nothing to loose. Where worries have no place and there is no reason to be happy. Man to animals nothing fear. Living in rational terms, is not life but beyond it such a life lives a sadhu. “One who attains perfect control over self is sadhak, henceforth termed as Sadhu” says Ranjit Singh Verma alias Aftab Dahalvi, an insurance employee, a known Urdu poet and now a Sadhu, “Not exactly but vying to become. There are two ways to become Sadhu either seva (service) Sadhana (penance). What drives an individual to choose either way is difficult to explain like air that you can feel but not able to explain it. It is reality worth experiencing than debating over it verbally.” No responsibility, no emotional bondage makes them fearless and many fear them. “They are trouble causer sometime. In crowd some of them turned out to be drug peddlers, thugs, shawman creating nuisance in the system.” Add R.K. sudhanshu Collector Hardwar region highlighting fact of their given traveling status there are no such records that how many they are in numbers. “SSP of this region has a plan where we would be able to maintain record of every arriving Sadhu. And it is important as they leave body there is nobody many a time to claim their body and many times it causes trouble as they die without antecedent leaving assets crossing billion marks in value subsequently it becomes headache for system.” Explains Sudhanshu giving instance of a murder of Sadhu took place some days back who left a huge property behind, “Constitution of India recognize them as normal citizen but their free and fearless way of living causes panic in common man sometime.”
“This pious place is meant for Jal Samadhi of Saints and sadhus. ‘Grihast’ should go to either chandi or kankhal ghats. One who doesn’t follow the order would be subjected to legal procedures. – By orders. Sudhanshu is not aware of this hoarding placed at ghat number 10 on banks of Ganges in Hardwar. “Many reporters worldwide came here and expressed their opinion in media channels. I maintain record of every Sadhu brought here for cremation. They come from every nook and corner of India even if they leave their body outside India they are brought here. First we give them bath of Milk, honey, sandal paste, pure ghee and than perform their last rites closing their body in Sandal wood coffin or huge knapsack (Depending on their financial standing) filled with stones and push them in sapt dhara into fathoms deep water.” Says Sukhdev giri Maharaj performing rites at ghat since 40 years and in charge of maintenance of records of every arrival.
Often their initiation and previous life is subjected to mysterious circumstances. “I am OM that’s it” explains Om when been asked about his previous life putting full stops on all questions. A Greek and musician by profession his life now sings altogether a different tune. He heard it at age of 18 and gave up everything at age of 26. “It was like trading I was giving things away and it was coming to me rapidly. I don’t look it as that I am not contributing to society but I am not taking something away and I could be a part of faith governing system as I devote all time to prayers and penance.”
It’s a devoted life where they owe nothing and after they leave body it is devoted to taste buds of myriad tortoises and fish. To sum it up when I live I don’t owe anything to anybody and I die I belong to everybody.

Agile CIO- Transformation from an IT Leader to Business Leader – challenges ahead.

Agile CIO- Transformation from an IT Leader to Business Leader – challenges ahead.

In reality, technology is changing quickly, but the CIO’s responsibility is to understand the needs of the business and then translate that need into how they meet them. New technology is not that interesting unless it solves our business problems. We need to understand the business problem first and then understand the technology. What is important is to decide where one can apply new technology to the business. CIOs need to be literate but need not be updated on every single technology. One of the key challenges for IT is to keep up to the business. Business keeps changing. There are talk around how to align IT with their business. Main challenge for CIOs would be how to globalize and start connecting with the rest of the world. As companies become more global, being a CIO of that single country company is actually easier than being a global CIO of a global company. It is challenging due to issues such as regulatory requirements, understanding the culture and connect with business leaders.
With unprecedented business growth and IT being the key driver for it, expectations from a CIO are increasing. Technology enables the ‘C’ suite to run a sound business. That said, technology investments need to be made wisely, otherwise they can adversely affect a business. The role of IT is defined in most organizations today as a business partner. There is complete awareness at the top about the potential of IT to facilitate fulfillment of business objectives. If an organization gets results from a few IT deployments, those strengthen its positive conviction about IT. Once this happens, the sky is the limit for the growth of the IT function in that organization. This is the most opportune time for IT to grow by aligning with the business. It’s time to act as business partner and to be a CIO Leader not merely into a support function.
“If you are in Production kind of set up than bottom line is that production should go up with cost coming down,” says Manik Pal CIO, Orica “ So you need to come out of technology kind of thinking and say YES to innovations”. True CIO leadership requires two important abilities. Firstly you must lead with your business colleagues to set expectations and to identify what is valued by enterprise leaders and secondly, you must lead your IS Team to deliver on that.
“Legal and regulatory issues, New products introduced by competitors, the entry of new competitors, their success or failures, product pricing, raw material pricing, trading and there are other issues you must know to be a leader.” Continues Manik Pal.
It is prime importance for a CIO to have in-depth knowledge of business processes in order to identify a problem and than suggesting technology oriented solution to it. “So identify Key Performance indicators in given environment. This is where your actual transformation strategy starts taking place.” Explains Subroto Banerjee General Manager IT, Sterlite Group. “When you implement a system it is very important to relate it with business processes and do a thorough profitability analysis before identifying Key performance indicators.” Any investment needs a return visible in profitability of company. And first stage to show that visibility is sound planning of any system. Anything devised should be close to Product management having direct impact on sales of product. “A value proposition analysis will help but most importantly you must put your house in order. You must create effective governance weaving Business strategy and IT strategy. IT strategy is the content of key IT domains – IT maxims, infrastructure, architecture and application strategies and investment.” Advocate Shyamal Raichowdhary CIO Tata Tea, “once you have developed a vision aligned with business goals you must develop team to achieve business goals. Develop such teams and building competencies required for IS organization one that relies much more on internal and external relationships. Than comply issues like Information security, data privacy, cyber terrorism with regulatory structure of business.”
A leader is best when people barely know he exists, not so good when people obey and acclaim him, worse when they despise him....But of a good leader who talks little when his work is done, his aim fulfilled, they will say, "We did it ourselves. Another challenge in way to become Business leader from IT Leader!

From Captain to Coach

From Captain to Coach

Leading a business is a tough job in the best of circumstances. How one balances the complex roles of business leader, steward of corporate assets and fallible human being can lead to vastly different outcomes. The roles often have conflicting demands and may leave the CEO feeling, at the end of the day, that there's no way to win. While there are no easy answers, the CEO can change these circumstances with a deliberate, considered effort to lead in collaborative ways. And one of them is to be a coach. In today’s competitive environment you need to attain and practice new work habits. To become a coach from a captain is not a luxury but a necessity.

Power play doesn’t work but it needs a mentorship. In past CEO’s focus was on result and now paradigms are shifting to people.
It is time when organization run short of talent so CEO should play a mentoring role looking organization from outside. He must analyze how is decision is perceived and what perception people carry about their roles and organization.
“Training is now a need, which has to be undertaken everyday at every level. So a new CEO means who remains behind curtain and train people.” Says Prince Augustine, President, Mahindra Group “There is a lot of change in attitude that time is demanding and it has to be context specific. Leaders must take step towards fulfilling personal self-actualization needs. They must enhance their social responsibility.”
Enhancing Social responsibility of business also means strengthening corporate branding strategies, enhancing role of business and be more sensitive towards society needs and its progress. “While playing this role he must see organization from all the angles from outside and see where actually shaping and reshaping is needed” continues Prince.
Information revolution has empowered everyone and people are empowered with ideas like ever before. It’s not about managing people but managing ideas and intellectualism. “A Leader must be direction provider now helping people to club their personal goals with organizational goals so as they achieve want they want at the same time enhancing growth of their organizations.” Says Sridhar Patrachari CEO of Aqua logistics, “In past CEO’s focus was result but now employees awareness levels have gone up so paradigms should shift to people. They must convey Team Leaders to mentor thoughts and coach them in training minds. A CEO not only has wisdom but power of experience that young mind needs”. Explain Patrachari.
Looking at recent Sharukh flick Chak De India Leaders must know that when a team captain lift the cup the whole credit goes to coach. How a coach handles situation, handles people and handles professional and personal problems of players affect overall performance of team. A coach reserve power to change Captain and has power to raise a 12th man to achieve status of captain.
“In corporate sector best example is of Narayan Murthy of Infosys, a Chief Mentor Officer now. He is playing a perfect role of a coach and growth of Infosys is exemplary and credit goes to his coaching and mentoring abilities” accentuates Gaurav Verma HR Professional from Heinz India “How a CEO is being perceived by people plays a pivotal role when we talk about transition of role from being a captain to coach. If his way of doing things have brought success to company than it is best time for him to share his ways of doing day to day things shaping long term goals.”
Relationships become key to the effective sharing of needed information. Collaborative relationships create the connections inside the organization required to operationalize its strategic intent. These relationship interconnections are referred as "thought partnerships." More specifically, a thought partnership is a relationship formed among two or more people, in a value creating enterprise for the purpose of generating social or intellectual value. Thought partnerships are the fundamental ingredient needed to be successful in any collaborative relationship between the Coach and his/her team. No team can afford "victim thinking" or "finger-pointing." To stay positive and productive, leaders must be able to adjust their own attitudes when discouragements or unwelcome situations come their way. And they must encourage those they lead to do likewise. With a variety of easy-to-use "Attitude Adjustments," leaders learn to accept and even profit from difficult change and crisis, instead of resenting and resisting them. Being authoritative and dictator is good when you have people who are not responsive to change and happy and content with way they are doing their job. But when you want same set of people should be responsive, have an urge to grow and wish to be progressive than coach them dictatorship won’t work.
Its all about growing organizations not individual.

Temple for all - Ganesha temple in Kuala lumpur

Temple for all - Ganesha temple in Pudu raya, Kuala lumpur

Time is 4 pm Thursday in Malaysia. Place is Puduraya, a transnational bus depot. It’s chaotic with hordes of tourist and travelers rushing to catch their buses. Street full of pedestrian, vendor stalls occupied with customers and hustle – bustle is on its peak.
Diagonally opposite to bus stand, behind there is stillness and tranquility prevailing as it is time for prayer and Aarti (act of burning camphor and singing hymns in praise of God) in Ganesha temple.
People from all walks of life and religion are there to ask the divine for fulfillment of their wishes. Hindus, Chinese, Sikhs and everyone standing out there are devotees now standing in front of divine.
Located in an Islamic nation Malaysia in heart of Kuala lumpur this temple is known for its divine powers.
As per Vastu science the temple built upon 3 sloping corners is a source of divine power where cosmic energy flows naturally. Its only temple noticed in the world where shankh pooja (conch shell with holy sacred water) is performed.
It is spectacular to see glittering black statue of Ganesha taking bath of water, honey, curd, sandal and milk.
Looking at one of the bell with 1913 carved on it one can presume day when it came to existence but its history as told by narrator dates back to 1897. An Indian gardener employed in residence of British police officer Wagner Durai discovered this statue placed under a peepal tree. It is believed that migrant workers that British bought from India should have placed the statue. He then started performing rituals and build a small shrine hanging bells. Its vibes started drawing attention of people around and sound of bell there annoyed Wagner that he ordered to remove statue from there. And next day he had paralytic stroke. All treatments tried and tested failed to treat paralyzed body and one day sitting in front of statue he surrendered and prayed for his recovery. Than gardener applied ash of aarti saw a miraculous recovery of officer. Then he donated land and an amount to construct a temple that till date numbers of devotees are growing.
Some years back High court building was located there. Any lawyer taking up the case in state of dilemma;  any judge giving verdict on sensitive matter; any petitioner who had lost his hopes and seeking justice, use to pray before proceeding to building. There are many such stories of prayers being answered and people donating bounty as offering to God that today High Court building is not there but lawyers still do come and pray. Majority of donation comes from the lawyers that they bow in front of supreme law before taking up any case.
People have witnessed miracles happening and there are many such stories to prove authenticity of such acts. Daily they make place vibrant with mantras and yagyas. In Hindu philosophy mantra is a medium to please gods and evoking powers. At one end of spectrum it is believed Chanting Mantra is a form of prayer that Hindus believe Gods listen to. On other end of spectrum it is a believe Prayer is a universal philosophy. It doesn’t matter how you pray but what matter is that you pray.
Indulge yourself in vibrations of temple and feel the power. Close your eyes and look into your heart and pray. Your prayer will go up and answer come down. Arrival of people from all religion multi ethnic background proves a point that it’s not mantra that God listen to but your devotion with which you have offered prayer.  With all reverence when you surrender in front of a statue than power gets evoke in stone and you than are connected. When you still yourself and calm down you already have started process of connecting to cosmic powers. Once you feel the union happening you have started wakening the God within.

Welcome to the beautiful empire of dead - Some of world’s most haunted places

Welcome to the beautiful empire of dead
Some of world’s most haunted places
There is a lane near my apartment in Malaysia that connects a pedestrian to metro rail line. By the lane there is a Malaysian cemetery. White tombs, fruit laden trees, blossoming flowers, green iron grills with moon and star engraved on it forms a picturesque scene captivating every eye passing by. Whenever I take a walk I see children who are notorious for their noise they made, looks tight lipped with fear. The peace prevailing is disturbing to few but attract attentions of many. They bury their loved ones with pomp and show that it is a farewell to perished body and at same time celebrating rebirth of soul. Most feared human death so we cannot rule out that decorum there is to mitigate the fear. Have a look at any Chinese cemetery and you will reach to conclusion that death is more grandeur than life. Since ages burial place like pyramids of Egypt have attracted tourists. Life after death is always a subject matter of craving and curiosity and it has huge fan following.  In the same way the world’s most wanted haunted places are most admired places among tourists.
Name of the place: Catacombs of Paris
Location: Near to Metro station, Paris France
Background and what makes it a haunting place.
In the late 17th century when cremation of bodies reached saturation level that it became public concern this cemetery of innocent was transferred to quarries beneath Paris grounds. Under stewardship of Inspector General of quarries Charles Axel Guillaumot this network of tunnels stretching to 300km was converted into graveyard with human skulls and bones embossed on the walls. With growing popularity it was opened to public in 1867 and till date it is visited by hundreds of them. Numbers they have limited to 200 visitors a day walking 2 kms in 45 minutes. Its walls, pillars, floors are made up of human bones and skulls with spell bounding beauty networked in entire tunnel and from here it got its name catacombs. Since 17th century media has highlighted this magnificent place as place connecting to history of Paris comprising bodies of more than 6 million Parisians. A walk through this tunnel takes you out of time and pillars with paintings grasp your attention at prima facie and makes your journey an unforgettable experience
New Orleans
Location: Pennsylvania, United states
Background and what makes it a haunting place
Voted as best among 10 best haunted place of USA for 2004,2005 and 2006 consecutively New Orleans is famous for its haunted mansions too. Voodoo curses, mysterious murders, war era pirate killings, civil war causalities and on other end of spectrum is Jazz, splendid food, grand night life. These are like two sides of a coin you see when you take a tour of New Orleans. Here we welcome you to the city of ghosts and dead which is very live and beautiful at the same time. The city offers fine dining experience lasting till wee hours, X rated entertainment on Bourbon streets and ghosts like figures meandering on streets. Many of the tourists have witnessed and took photographs of free flowing spirits without bodies. They are out of the cycle of death and birth and they are harmless and have become part and parcel of residents out here. If you take a stroll on the streets and look at the balconies of the houses, it has reflections of hanging gardens of Babylon. If you take a snap of those iron grilled balconies, you might get lucky enough to have a spirit getting visible in your photo. In the legendary city of dead, is a cemetery where over 90% burials are over the ground. From individual graves to family tombs you can see skulls on the walls. Walk a little ahead towards St. Louis cemetery number 1,and there is the grave of legendary voodoo queen Marie Lavaeau. Many people from different corners of the world comes and pays their tribute to the queen. Scattered candles, flowers, fetishes and other items show their reverence towards the queen. If you visit this place during mid of June, you might be able to see the live rituals of the queen going in front of your eyes.
Sedlec Ossuary
Location: Sedlec, a suburb of Kutná Hora in the Czech Republic
Background and what makes it a haunting place
King Otakar II of Bohemia sent Henry, an abbot of monastery to visit holy land. On his arrival he bought the soil of a  holy land and sprinkled it around the monastery ,that till date it is a wish of a dying person to get buried here and is considered to be pious. It is a honor for a dead to get buried in  the catholic chapel now named as Sedlec Ossuary. In Sedlec, a suburb of Czech Republic, there are burials of 40,000- 70,000 dead bodies, arranged in a beautiful asymmetry to form spell bounding decorations of bones and skulls. After black deaths in 14th century and Husite wars in 15th century, the cemetery had to be enlarged. It took over two centuries to beautify place with same bones and skulls. As you enter the chapel, a magnificent chandelier made up of bones shows slog of people they put in for two centuries. These people came from every walk of life, like a half blind monk, a wood carver, painters and designers who made the remains of  the dead bodies live and gave it a grand look. Many films and documentaries have been shot here. It’s bizarre to see all this but it is worth seeing as there is more to it  than 70,000 human’s  skulls and bones put together to give it a spell binding beauty.
Edinburgh vaults
Location: South bridge, Edinburgh, Scotland
Background and what makes it a haunting place
Under the South Bridge in Scotland are series of rooms that once upon a time were used as a storage space and workshops for the South bridge businesses. After the construction of the bridge it became red light districts housing criminals, prostitutes and slum dwellers in a dingy rooms. Mystery murders, serial killings made these vaults infamous between 1835 and 1875. It came in limelight when some of the personalities like Norrie Rowan a rugby player, used it along with his friends to escape the secret Romanian police. The place is famous for adventure tourism and ghosts. People comes here to see and meet the spirits in the gloomy and candle light lit corridors. Norrie Rowan converted south gate into the caves but most of the attention has been given to the spirits like cantankerous “Mr. Boots” and young “Jack” who giggles and can be seen running in the corridors. They have appeared in UK’s top TV show “Most Haunted” as well in “Halloween”.  Plagues, witches, hangings and ghosts comprise darker side of the place but this place is getting fresh attention for opening of the underground vaults or catacombs. It became the live burial ground for thousands of people who died during the era of “Black Death” and since than it has became Britain’s most haunted location.
Colosseum- An amphitheatre
Location: Center of Rome, Italy
Background and what makes it a haunting place
Capable of seating 50,000 people this amphitheatre in Rome was used for gladiator like games, which comprised  killings of animals and more than 500,000 human beings .During early 21st century earthquake caused visible harm to it but this spectacular icon of roman architecture still attracts attention, especially when Pope leads a torch lit “way of the cross” procession in this amphitheatre. Once upon a time it was a place for capital punishment and now it is symbol of peace. Voted as one of the “New Open World Corporations” new seven wonders of world, this was  a place of commencing the gladiators like fights during sixth century AD. Than it turned out to become the hideouts of the thieves and dwelling place for workers in 1643. Colosseum is a place, where the gladiators awaited to fight, prisoners waited for their time to die in the most ghastly of ways and still lives there the spirits, that got embedded here. Visitors and tour guides of today have reported many paranormal experiences. There have been cold spots, some have said  that they felt someone touch or push them, and heard someone whispering in their ears. The night workers of the Colosseum have reported sword clashing, sounds of crying, and noises of animals such as the roars of beasts imported from Africa and Middle East countries during time of Ceaser. Some have even seen ghostly figures sitting in the seats of the Colosseum.
Transylvania
Location: Centre part of Romania
Background and what makes it a haunting place
Known as the “cursed land” Transylvania, one of three former principalities (the others being Moldavia and Wallachia) which form the modern state of Romania, is extended to the west to Apuseni mountains. After Roman legions withdrew in 271 AD, it was ruled by various barbarian tribes. It is most famous for its temple of Dracula and you will be surprise to know that, without even visiting the temple author of the  “Dracula Bram Stoker” described it as the  headquarters to Dracula and the vampires. It is invariably represented as a mysterious and supernatural stuff  in famous Dracula films and fictions and as a matter of fact, its inhabitants are still depicted as backward peasants, who holds fast to their primitive and superstitious past, who still hang garlic on their windows to keep vampires away, and who would never venture out at night without a crucifix in hand.
For most people today, Transylvania is still a mysterious, mountainous, mist-shrouded region, deep in the forbidding Carpathian Mountains. Travel writers and Dracula enthusiasts help to perpetuate this stereotype by waxing eloquent, when they describe this region. For example, in the November 1994 issue of the” Life”, Marilyn Johnson writes: Once upon a time, the mysterious and creepy realms of Dracula seemed like a figment of Bram Stoker’s imagination. But it turns out that the inspiration of this dark kingdom is for real, found in the Romanian province. The mist-covered mountains are real, the crumbling castles are real, the howling wolves, swooping bats, peasants making the signs of the cross, all real.
A similar tendency is evident in the media coverage. Writing in 1995 for the “World Dracula Congress”, Julius Strauss of “The Guardian” noted that “Even today, Eastern Transylvania is a land of misty mountains, superstitious, rural peasants, growling bears and howling wolves.” Not surprisingly, Romanians (especially Transylvanians) today are somewhat confused, and even bemused, by such responses.
On Transylvania Mountains there located Dracula’s castle. As per folklore when Turkish army surrounded him, he disappeared in the mountains and is still meandering in the jungles, seen in the castle number of times.
Auschwitz concentration camp
Location: Oswiecim, Poland, Europe
Background and what makes it a haunting place
Now declared as the world heritage site it was one of the most infamous Nazi’s concentration camps where more than 3 million people died in the gas chambers and some got succumbed to systematic hunger, forced labor and purported medical experiments. In the remembrance of the victims, Poland founded a museum and its entrance is crowned with the words “work brings the freedom”. There are some 16 blocks and each block represents its legacy of pain, that prisoner suffered. Like, block 13 was a standing cell of 16 square feet, where 4 people stand together for the whole day and night and were deprived of food and water till they get succumbed to death. Dark cells comprised of tiny window and solid doors and the prisoners died in this as they exhausted the available oxygen. To make the process  of exhausting of the oxygen rapid, they used to light the candles in the cells. The execution yards are there in block 10 and 11, where you can still see the walls, where the prisoners were shot and were hooked on the walls. Most visited is the gas chamber, in which some 60,000 people were killed in the basement of the block 11.
Visitors paying a visit to Auschwitz-Birkenau reportedly experienced overwhelming sense of foreboding; breaking down in tears for no apparent reason. Visitors were struck not only by the horrific memory of the place, but also by the effect it has on the present day: birds still refuse to sing on the trees surrounding the death camps and no trees grows, no flowers blossoms in the environment anywhere nearby. The silence and the sense of fear they experience is strange, even after all these years.

People have reported cold spots and areas of intense emotional concentration. Photographs over the years have revealed the presence of spirit manifestations in the form of misty apparitions, shadows, light anomalies and cries.
Unit 731
Location: Harbin City, State of Manchukuo, China
Background and what makes it a haunting place
Located in Northwest China in Harbin city, district Pingfang, Unit 731 is now a tourist attraction drawing attention of people towards atrocities that a human mind can conduct to seek power. An example of power corrupt mind, every corner of unit 731 yells out brutality of Japanese army under stewardship of Shiro Ishii, the commander of the unit. In this unit they carried out purported purposeful experiments on nationalities of America, Russians and Chinese to develop weapons of biological warfare. This resulted  into possible deaths of some 200,000 people. The complex is spread in 6 square kilometer, housing some 150 buildings, 4500 containers used to raise fleas. Six giant plants to make chemicals and to fill it in 1800 containers is still present there. As for now some of the units are being used for the industrial purposes, but the rest of them reminds us of the most heinous war crimes.
At that time, the unit was disbanded into headquarters. Parts of the Unit 731 complex still remain – there are buildings where experiments were performed on man and animals, courtyards and open areas where prisoners were subjected to live bombs detonated at close range to enable researchers to evaluate the effect of explosives of the sort that Japanese soldiers were encountering in the fields.
The Chinese government sanctioned the Unit and the surrounding area as a learning center for the future generations of Chinese, and just recently visitors from the West have been allowed access to the killing fields at Harbin. There are reports of paranormal activity associated with the old charnel houses: ghost lights and apparitions are frequently seen, including a ghostly figure that walks in the empty precincts surroundings of the frostbite units. Ghostly voices have been heard and anomalies frequently appear in photographs taken in the area. Recently, during the filming of a BBC television documentary, the English film crew experienced unexplainable problems with their lights and batteries – often a sure sign of ghostly activity. Many speculate that as the story of Unit 731 is more widely told, the ghosts of those tragically tormented and murdered there are becoming more and more active, and more anxious for justice than ever before.
Gettysburg
Gettysburg – Pennsylvania USA
Background and what makes it a haunting place
It is a place where the largest battle was fought and it is the place with large number of ghost stories, this is the battlefield of Gettysburg where President Abraham Lincoln gave a very impressive speech after the war was over. This is the place where the US 20th Marine saw ghost of George Washington that leaded them to the battlefield. On July 4th 1863 there were some 28,000 causalities noted in Pennsylvania region. It was one of the bloodiest civil war where one third people died in the region. If lost and not been able to find the battlefield, just go around in the village and ask, and everyone will tell that you are standing in the field itself. Since the war was so close to the town, many houses were used as a  make shift hospitals, to nurse the sick, many soldiers died. People have experienced the “phantom smells” in Baltimore streets and odour of peppermint. As per rumor, ladies used to carry the  handkerchief with smell of peppermint covering their mouth to avoid the smell of the blood. That smell is still in the air. Gettysburg College now known as Pennsylvania College, consisted of three brick buildings, where some 100 students were killed, during the war. Till date one can see the physical effects but the spirits are also seen. Pennsylvania Hall is the most haunted place in the campus, with white columns, where many officers and students have seen figures of soldiers pacing back and forth in the building.
Nearby in Farnsworth hall ,the breakfast is still served as during those days. It has the original rafters and flooring with some 100 bullet holes, where many have seen a woman in her period clothes and one when tries to get closer, she disappears. The battle has left its spirits behind.
East End
Location: White chapel, London East End, London, England.
Back ground and what makes it haunting place
In the north of the Thames River is situated the East End of London. The East End came into being as the separate villages, in the east of London, spread and the fields between them were built upon, a process that occurred in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. From the beginning, East End has always contained some of the poorest areas of London. This part had became synonymous with poverty, overcrowding, disease and criminality .The White chapel / Spittal fields area of East London has been mostly inhabited by Anglos and Jewish moneylenders. It was a place of soldiers and prostitutes, brawls and bawdy houses, thieves and the most derelicts of English society.

In 1888 the White chapel area of London was the spot of some of the most brutal murders by the famous “Jack the Ripper” crimes. Murders and identity of Jack remain unsolved, even today. Some says that the killer was a psychopathic doctor; others believe that the killer, to have been Queen Victoria’s grandson, Prince Albert Victor, but it doesn’t have an iota of truth as there are no proofs to support it.

Five women, all of them poor prostitutes, were slaughtered by the mysterious Jack in the span of just four months, known collectively as “The Autumn of Terror.”  Nevertheless, it is thought that his horrible mutilation of Mary Kelly was his last act of violence and there is no evidence that Jack, whoever he may have been, killed again after November 1888.

Today, the visitors to London’s East End can walk through the streets and visit pubs and other locations that Jack may have haunted in life – and death. Walking tours of the area are very popular and Jack’s legacy is certainly the most enduring. Other ghosts that haunts the East End are those of Jack’s victims, in various stages of mutilation; a ghostly band of Roman soldiers; a murderous sea captain’s ghost that haunts a local pub; and a mysterious black carriage drawn by ghastly white horses that approaches without a sound and disappears right before your eyes. These and other haunts, combined with the long haunted history of the East End make it one of the must visit ghostly locations in the world.
